Manufacturing Technology, Inc. (MTI) today announced that the company has finalized the purchase of a 117,000 square foot building located on Sheridan Street in South Bend. The new facility will more than double the size of the company’s growing Manufacturing Services division, which designs, develops and produces friction-welded parts for the aerospace, automotive and medical device industries. The building was formerly owned by the Mohawk Door division of Masonite International Corporation.
“This purchase allows MTI to expand our contract manufacturing capabilities,” said Mike Laiman, Business Unit Manager for Manufacturing Services. “With so much open production space, MTI is now well-positioned for the capacity needs of our high-volume customers.”
In addition to the cost of the building, MTI will be investing over $1 million in site renovations and improvements immediately, with an estimated additional $2 million to be spent over the next three years on new technology development and additional equipment installation.
The City of South Bend and State of Indiana both assisted with the development. Machines and equipment used in Manufacturing Services will be combined at the new building from two MTI locations on Washington Street and Sample Street in South Bend. This allows for greater machine production floor space at MTI’s Washington Street location, while the leased facility on Sample will be vacated. Renovations are expected to last several months, with the move in of equipment occurring in stages throughout 2016.
MTI has established itself as a leader in friction welding, including Low-Force Friction, Rotary Friction, Linear Friction, and Friction Stir Welding technologies. In addition to contract manufacturing services, MTI has delivered machines to Boeing, GE, Rolls- Royce, Pratt and Whitney, Federal Mogul, and many of their tier one suppliers. A family owned business founded in 1926, MTI employs 180 people in their South Bend, United Kingdom, and China locations.
