Manufacturing Technology, Inc. has established a working relationship with Bond Technologies, Inc., which is licensing certain Friction Stir Welding intellectual property from the company. MTI recently announced that it is exiting the FSW machine building business to focus on other business segments, including contract welding.

Dan Adams, Vice President of MTI, said, “Though building FSW machines no longer fits within our business model, we have always been interested in the technology. Our licensing arrangement with Bond Technologies gives MTI’s customers the opportunity to move forward with a passionate and dedicated team, and allows the industry to benefit from our years of FSW machine research and development.”

The synergistic relationship between MTI and Bond Technologies evolved from the company’s FSW wind down process and is being spearheaded by MTI’s former FSW business unit manager, Dave Hofferbert. MTI continues to offer customers complete FSW contract welding services from process development through full part production. Bond Technologies will also have access to MTI’s contract welding FSW machines for weld development projects required for part related machine builds.

Hofferbert, who is the President of Bond Technologies, commented, “Bond Technologies will hit the ground running as we are able to leverage the intellectual property of MTI. We will start off with a staff of 7 people with more than 50 years of combined experience in the design and construction of FSW systems.”

Other than the licensing agreement, MTI will not have a financial interest in Bond Technologies, Inc.

MTI has established itself as a leader in friction welding, including Rotary Friction, Low-Force Friction and  Linear Friction Welding technologies. MTI has delivered machines to Boeing, GE, Rolls- Royce, Pratt and Whitney, and many of their tier one suppliers. A family owned business founded in 1926, MTI employs 180 people in their South Bend, United Kingdom, and China locations.
