mti-logo-1.pngSOUTH BEND, IN-  As part of an ongoing strategy of investing in and adapting to the best market opportunities, Manufacturing Technology, Inc. (MTI) is proactively realigning its US machine build and corporate operations.  This allows the company to be more cost competitive, and will result in 24 positions being eliminated or reassigned. MTI’s UK operation is not affected.

MTI’s US business is built around large complex friction welding machines, a successful niche, but only a small portion of the global market.  The global friction welding machine market is dominated by smaller automated machines.  This is a segment where the US operation has become much less cost competitive over time.

Recognizing these evolving market dynamics, MTI is taking steps to evolve its business as well.  MTI continues to invest in new joining technologies and product development that should see positive results over the next 24 months.  The company is also looking at unifying the customer experience and improving operational execution.

In 2015, MTI invested in a 127,000 sq. ft. facility in South Bend to house our growing contract Manufacturing Services group.  Since then, the company’s Manufacturing Services business has seen solid growth potential with parts being produced for new customers in aerospace and automotive.

Earlier this year MTI also acquired ProSpot resistance welding in the UK, doubling the size of our UK operation.  Like Manufacturing Services, ProSpot has also been a success as MTI has expanded its resistance welding and automation reach into new European automotive customers.

MTI has established itself as a leader in friction and resistance welding, including Rotary Friction, Linear Friction, and Friction Stir Welding technologies.  In addition to contract manufacturing services based in the US and UK, MTI has delivered machines to Boeing, GE, Rolls-Royce, Pratt and Whitney, Federal Mogul, and many of their tier-one suppliers.  A family-owned business founded in 1926, MTI employs 250 people in their South Bend, United Kingdom, and China locations.

About MTI

In 1926 our founder, Conrad Adams, may not have been able to visualize all the great things ahead for his family’s small tool and die company. However, he could see a bright future solving problems for his customers. Through hard work and a steadfast dedication to solving their most challenging manufacturing problems, the little company from South Bend, Indiana became the world-leader in friction welding technologies, providing engineered solutions from golf putters to jet engines. Today – nine decades and four generations later – MTI’s commitment continues with a solid succession plan and a vision for GREATNESS in place for the next generation.
